Guns & Gulaabs is a Netflix original series that combines black comedy, crime thriller, and romance genres. It is created and directed by Raj & DK, the makers of The Family Man and Stree. The series is set in the 90s and follows the lives of four misfits who get involved in a high-stakes opium deal in the cartel-run town of Gulaabgunj.
The series begins with Arjun Verma (Dulquer Salmaan), a cop from Delhi who is transferred to Gulaabgunj, a small town in Uttar Pradesh that is ruled by the ruthless politician and drug lord Ganchi (Satish Kaushik). Arjun is initially a honest and upright officer who wants to clean up the town from corruption and crime, but he soon realizes that he is out of his depth and has no allies in the police department. He also faces resistance from his wife (Pooja Gor), who is unhappy with his transfer and wants to go back to Delhi.
Arjun’s life takes a turn when he meets Panna Tipu (Rajkummar Rao), a mechanic who works at his father’s garage. Panna is a lovestruck young man who is obsessed with Chandralekha (TJ Bhanu), a beautiful girl who lives in the same neighborhood. Panna is unaware that Chandralekha is actually the daughter of Ganchi, and that she is engaged to Sambi (Ashmith Kunder), Ganchi’s right-hand man and Arjun’s arch-enemy. Panna also has a secret: he is the son of 4 Cut Atmaram (Gulshan Devaiah), a legendary gangster who was killed by Ganchi years ago.
Arjun and Panna become friends after Arjun saves Panna from Sambi’s goons. Arjun also helps Panna woo Chandralekha by giving him tips and advice. However, their friendship is tested when Arjun discovers Panna’s true identity and his connection to Ganchi. Arjun also learns that Panna has inherited his father’s stash of opium, which is worth crores of rupees. Arjun decides to use Panna as a pawn to bring down Ganchi and his empire, but he also develops a soft spot for him.
Meanwhile, another misfit enters the scene: Chhota Ganchi (Adarsh Gourav), the son of Ganchi who has returned from abroad after completing his studies. Chhota Ganchi is a reluctant heir who has no interest in his father’s business or politics. He is more interested in music, art, and literature. He also has a crush on his childhood friend, Naina (Shreya Dhanwanthary), who is now a journalist working for a local newspaper. Chhota Ganchi tries to impress Naina by exposing his father’s crimes, but he ends up creating more trouble for himself and his family.
The four misfits cross paths when Ganchi decides to sell his opium stash to an international buyer, who turns out to be none other than 4 Cut Atmaram’s old partner. The buyer offers a huge amount of money for the deal, but he also demands that Panna be present as a sign of trust. Arjun sees this as an opportunity to bust Ganchi and his cartel, but he also faces a dilemma: should he betray Panna or protect him? Panna also faces a choice: should he follow his father’s legacy or pursue his love? Chhota Ganchi also joins the fray, hoping to sabotage his father’s deal and win Naina’s heart.
